School bus GPS tracking: why parents demand it and how to enable it
Live bus tracking on a map is table-stakes in 2026. Here is how parents use it, what it costs, and what to look for in a school ERP.
Ten years ago, school bus tracking was a safety-focused pitch. Today, it is a parent expectation. If your school does not offer live bus GPS in the parent app, you are explaining why — not why not.
What parents actually do with it
- Watch the bus approach the stop so they send the child out only when needed

What it takes to enable
- A GPS-equipped driver phone or dedicated tracker per bus (cost: ~₹2,000 one-time for the tracker, ~₹0 if using driver phones)

- Routes defined with ordered stops and driver assignment

Pitfalls to avoid
Using driver personal phones without a policy
Drivers turn off GPS when the battery is low, lose the phone, or change jobs. A dedicated tracker or a policy-enforced company phone is more reliable.
No offline behaviour
Network drops in some areas. A good transport system queues location events and uploads when signal returns, so the trip log is complete even if live tracking had gaps.
Tracking only during trips, not between
Parents want to know the bus is on its way to the first stop, not just already-on-the-route. "Start trip" should kick off at the depot.
No per-trip boarding attendance for younger students
For playschools and primary, parents want confirmation their child actually got on the bus that morning. Per-trip boarding in the driver app gives them that notification.
What it costs the school
Most modern school ERPs include the transport module in the base price. Mapbox map tiles cost the vendor a few rupees per bus per month at typical trip volumes. If a vendor asks extra for GPS tracking, they are probably double-charging.
